Understanding SMS Templates

With SMS Magic, you can create templates for SMS messages that you send frequently. In the templates, you can use variables such as the object like name and address. These variables will be auto-populated with values when preparing to send an SMS message.

NOTE: Variables for an object are only visible within the objects template.  That is, if you create a template for Leads, then you can only use variables from the Leads object.

You create templates for all Salesforce.com objects, though the method of creating templates for standard and custom objects is slightly different, as given in the explanations below.

These are the topics that we cover in this article:

Create an SMS Template for Standard Objects (Leads & Contacts)

Create an SMS Template for Custom Objects (other than Leads & Contacts)

SMS Template Limitations

Rendering Text Encrypted Type field for SMS Template

Template list to show only Approved templates

Support for merge field of related objects in SMS templates

SMS Template Limitations

As you create these templates, keep the following in mind:

You cannot use look-up fields in an SMS template.

For any formula field that is being used in a template, the values are calculated and stored when the template is applied. The formula calculation is not carried out when creating the template.

All date formats correspond to the standard Salesforce.com date format. No other date format is available.

Rendering Text Encrypted Type field for SMS Template

SMS-Magic permits you to include encrypted fields in an SMS template. The following applies to encrypted fields in a SMS template:

Encrypted fields are encrypted with 128-bit master keys and Advance Encryption Standard(AES) algorithm.

Only users that have a View Encrypted Field permission can see the contents of an encrypted field.

Template list to show only Approved templates

With SMS-Magic, you can create a list of approved templates. Any rejected templates won't appear in this list.

The figure below shows an example of an approved template.

The next figure depicts how a rejected template would appear.

Support for merge field of related objects in SMS templates

You can place a merge field into a template to substitute the value of a specific field within a record.

With SMS-Magic, you can add merge fields to a SMS template–on multiple levels. Previous to 1.43 versions of the software would only permit merge fields on a single level.

For example, you can create merge fields for a contact as {!contact.account.name}. See the figure below.

In the figure below, you can see that the lead and contact fields have been configured.
